Firefighters Compete In Lexington Challenge

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters from throughout the U.S. and Canada are in Lexington this weekend for the Firefighter Combat Challenge.

The competition takes firefighters through an obstacle course set up near Lexington Green. The challenge simulates the demands of real life firefighting. Competitors are required to wear full bunker gear, climb a five story tower, hoist, chop, drag hoses and rescue a life size victim.

The challenge is all about encouraging firefighters to stay fit.

"We train year round--our team does. I've been training hard this last year, and it paid off. I just broke my PR by 30 seconds," said Lexington Firefighter John Barnott.

Firefighters who do well in the challenge this weekend will advance to the tournament in Louisville in August, and could advance all the way to the world tournament later this year.
