Friday's winter storm brought a potpourri of wintry precipitation to the Bluegrass. Blue Grass Airport in Lexington reported rain, freezing rain, and snow during this event. Some other areas also saw sleet mix in before completely changing over to snow. The day started off with rain as temperatures rapidly fell into the 30s. Lexington's temperatures held steady around 35° from 9 AM until 5:30 PM. During that time a plain cold rain continued to fall. Around the lunch hour, a dry sl...

I've been asked this question a lot lately. Whether it's in line at the grocery store, at the post office, or during the “Sunday Weather Q&A” live chats on the LEX 18 Facebook page. When is it going to snow? I'm getting the sense that Kentucky snow lovers are getting a little antsy. It has snowed in Lexington so far this season. A trace was recorded on Blue Grass Airport on October 29th. (Some areas even spotted some flurries, even up to a dusting of snow this morning...

Fires are raging in Southern California, despite the fact that their water year (wet season) began over two months ago. In fact, Los Angeles has acquired only 0.11” of rainfall since October 1st. That puts it at the 11th driest start of the water year since records have been kept. This doesn't help the fire situation. Conditions and soil are so dry that even just hot temperatures can spark a flame; and all it takes is one tiny flame. Fires encroaching on the 405 Freeway in Sou...

Road conditions deteriorate quickly when snow starts falling on very cold days. Winter weather is responsible for ~24% of all vehicle accidents per year. The quake struck at a depth of 5 miles, 6 miles ENE of the city of Dover.  The earthquake was originally reported as a magnitude 5.1, but was downgraded to a 4.1 after a review by the USGS. A 4.1 magnitude earthquake usually shakes the ground enough to knock items off shelves and maybe break a few windows. Most 4.1 magnitude earthquake are not deadly.
