He seemed like the help they needed after their car ran out of gas. But police say the man who stopped to assist a Scott County couple, ended up trying to sexually assault the woman.

It all started about eight o'clock Friday night in Lexington near the Scott County line, when the couple, in their late 20s, ran out of gas on U.S. 25, Georgetown Road.

A man stopped to help, saying he had a gas can.

"They decided she would ride with the good samaritan while the husband stayed with the car," said Scott County Sheriff's deputy Jeremy Day.

But it turns out the supposed good samaritan didn't have a gas can. When the woman's husband told her he made it to a nearby gas station, and asked her to come on back, that's when things took a scary turn.

"She told him that, but he said let's go back by my house where I have the gas can, and she said no, just take me back to my husband," said Day.

The man then pulled into the entrance to Hillcrest Farms of U.S. 25.

"He reclined the victim's seat fully, put his body on top of her, began to attempt to fondle her, molest her sexually," said Day.

At one point the woman was able to free herself from her attacker, and get out of the car. That's when police say the man, in an effort to get away quick, backed up into traffic on U.S. 25, and almost caused an accident.

The person whose car he almost backed into, came to the woman's rescue.

"She was what I would call the true good samaritan in this case," said Day.

That woman called 911, and was able to get a good description of the attacker's car, and his license number.

"Thank God she was able to get herself out of this situation and keep herself safe," said Day.

The couple had just recently moved to Scott County.

"It's unfortunate, because this is a great community, and it's something that really bothers you," said Day.

As of Sunday night, police say they do have a suspect in the case, and they say they could make an arrest within the next couple of days.
