A 10-year-old boy was flown to UK Hospital after his bicycle was hit by a pickup truck in Laurel County Friday afternoon.
The accident happened at about 5:15 p.m. North Main Street in front of Cumberland Valley National Bank. Police say that after investigation they determined that the boy, whose name has not been released, rode into the path of a truck driven by Dennis Fields, 66, of East Bernstadt.
Officers spoke with several witnesses who were on scene, and all witnesses agreed that a young boy on a bicycle crossed North Main Street in traffic and was struck by the white truck operated by Fields. Officers spoke with Michelle Trennell, operator of the black pickup truck which was alongside Fields in the slow lane when the collision occurred.
Trennell advised police that she observed the young boy on a bicycle pull out in front of her, stated that she slammed on her brakes and barely avoided the boy but that the white truck beside her in the fast lane could not see the boy and struck him.
No update on the condition of the juvenile is available at this time, who is believed to have suffered head injuries.
