An accident during cleanup after a truck flipped and spilled a chemical in McCreary County Thursday night sent two workers to the hospital.
Police shut down US-27 around 6 p.m. after a tanker truck carrying liquid sodium-hydroxide rolled over and leaked about 10 gallons of the chemical. Police say the truck was making a turn into a water treatment facility when a wheel dropped off the road, causing the truck to roll.
Emergency management officials say something went wrong and the tank was breached as a crew from the trucking company tried to offload the caustic chemical around 11 p.m., spilling around 3,000 gallons of the industrial lye. Two workers were completely covered and had to go through a decontamination process. EMS took them to a local hospital. Officials have not released any information on their condition.
Officials say they don't know how long it will take to complete the cleanup, or when US-27 will reopen.
Police are rerouting traffic onto KY-700 and KY-1045.
