A 2-year-old girl remained in critical condition Friday at UK Hospital after she nearly drowned when she fell into a swimming pool in Burgin Thursday afternoon.

Police say Anarae Lefau was playing with other children at a home on Curdsville Road. Family members told police they lost track of the child because one adult thought another was watching the little girl. Lefau wandered away from the group and fell into a back yard above-ground pool.

Police say the child was missing for about 10 minutes before her 10-year-old cousin jumped into the murky pool waters and found her. Lefau wasn't breathing and had no pulse. Her mother and grandmother called 911 and dispatch talked them through CPR.

Doctors were able to get a heartbeat back at the local hospital.

Police continue to investigate, following protocol whenever a child is injured, but investigators say they believe this incident was an accident and do not expect charges to be filed.
