A double leg amputee arrested after he he allegedly impersonated a cop and stole from a yard sale has been refusing treatment for health problems while being held in the Scott County Detention Center.

Monte Duvall, who is a double amputee with a history of problematic ulcers, was taken to the Scott County jail after his arrest over the weekend after he allegedly stole about $200 in items from a Georgetown yard sale.

While at the jail, Duvall began bleeding, but Duvall refused medical treatment. When jail staff later found him unconscious, they called paramedics, who took the 56-year-old to the hospital. But, Duvall adamantly denied treatment again.

Once back at the jail, Duvall was released on his own recognizance, but told the jail staff he had no car, was obviously handicapped and couldn't get into his home. The staff thought they were doing him a favor by taking him to a friend's house on West College Street, but there was quite a bit of debate about whether the people who lived there were okay with Duvall being dropped off there.

Eventually, Duvall was returned to the Scott County Detention Center, where he currently remains.

"Our Scott County jail is one of the best in the state, said Scott Couny jailer Larry Covington. "Nobody tries harder to take care of these inmates. There's no way, had we known that situation would occur, we wouldn't have taken him over there anyway."

Duvall said in a jailhouse interview Monday with LEX 18 that he is a down-on-his-luck Vietnam vet, and he told Adam Hobbs, the homeowner Duvall was accused of stealing from, that the sheriff's department needed to be called and tell them someone was going to get hurt after a car sped past. As for the yard sale items, Duvall says he left a debit card and license with the Hobbs, and said he'd come back.

Covington said that at this point, all it takes to get Duvall out of jail is for someone to pick him up and sign him out. So far, that has not happened.
