Nearly 100 dogs, several cats, chickens and a rabbit were blessed in Lexington Saturday.

It was all part of the Annual Blessing of the Animals. The blessing was held at the front steps of the Lexington Historical Museum during the Farmer's Market. The Rev. Carol Wade of Christ Church Cathedral conducted the ceremony and the Choristers of Christ Church Cathedral sang for the crowd.

The Friends of Animals of Jessamine County brought adoptable animals to be blessed and to meet people who may be looking for a pet.

The tradition of Blessing the Animals was begun as a way to honor Francis of Assisi, the beloved, twelfth century Italian. Francis was best known and remembered for his love for animals and the environment.
