Ingredients
1/2 cup cup solid vegetable shortening
2 cups granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon grated nutmeg
4 cups diced apples
1 cup chopped nuts
Sauce:
1 stick unsalted butter
2 tablespoons flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup half and half
Directions
Preheat oven to 350. Grease a 9X13 inch pan. Cream together the shortening and sugar. Add the eggs and mix well. In a small bowl, sift together the flour, soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add to the butter mixture and stir. Then mix in apples and nuts. Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 50 to 60 minutes until mixture shrinks from the sides of the pan. Remove and cool in the pan on a rack. Cut into squares and serve with butterscotch sauce.
Sauce: Over low heat, melt the butter, then gradually stir in the flour and sugars. Stir in the cream and cook, stirring constantly until thickened.
