Four months after Brian Griffin was shot and killed hunting turkeys in Clay County, a man is under arrest for the murder. Dwight Hughes, 61, is accused of ambushing a group of hunters and allegedly shooting two of them.
Griffin was a father, a husband and a friend. Therefore, not having him around is hard.
"Brian is extremely missed," said Robert Marcum. "When you lose somebody of his caliber, of his character, and how he loved his family and his wife... just a rock solid young man, that's really devastating to the community." For months, friends like Marcum have wondered about the case.
In April, Griffin and two friends were turkey hunting near Highway 638. Investigators said they were on a ridge, when suddenly someone started firing their way. Griffin was killed and one of his friends was wounded. Now, the Clay County Sheriff said that gunman was Dwight Hughes.
"Hearing that there was an arrest, that's certainly the first step of closure," said Marcum. It's closure people in Clay County have been waiting for.
On Thursday Griffin's loved ones put up a picture on Facebook, in his honor. Statuses of the photo vowed to keep the picture on Facebook profiles until justice is done. For friends, that means until the truth comes out.
"There's a lot of unanswered questions and things like that. And, hopefully they can get some answers through the court process," said Marcum.
Whatever happens from here, progress in the case is a step toward healing. "It won't bring him back, but it will help with closure," said Marcum.
As of Friday, Dwight Hughes was in the Clay County Detention Center. He is charged with murder, assault and wanton endangerment.
