Police in Harlan County said Monday that police in Madison County have made an arrest in the murder of a former Evarts mayor after he was found dead inside his burned home.
The fire was discovered on February 18 at a home on Kelly Street in Evarts. Officials say Ronney King, 59, who lived alone in the home, was killed. The following day, police say preliminary autopsy results indicated that King suffered a single gun shot wound, resulting in his death. The death investigation then became a murder investigation.
On Monday, the Kentucky State Police Special Response Team executed an arrest warrant at the residence of Shelby L Shell, 29, in Berea. Shell was arrested and charged with the death of King.
Shell is being brought back to Harlan County, were he will be held in the Harlan County Detention Center and charged with the following charges: murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, first-degree arson and tampering with physical evidence.
