Beshear Pushing Slots Again To Balance Budget

Posted: Jan 19, 2010 7:29 PM

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear is urging lawmakers to
legalize slots at Kentucky horse tracks as a way to stave off
massive budget cuts and potential layoffs of state workers.

Beshear called on lawmakers Tuesday to approve gambling
legislation that he said could generate $780 million for state
government over two years.

The proposal has proven divisive in the past in Kentucky where
political leaders have historically frowned on casino-style
gambling despite a long history of wagering on horse races,
lotteries and charitable games such as bingo.

Anti-gambling advocates quickly objected to Beshear's proposal.
Say No To Casinos spokesman Martin Cothran said the proposal stands
little chance of passing either the House or the Senate.

Leaders of both chambers have said previously they believe it
lacks the support necessary to pass.

Exactly how much money do Kentuckians need to lose to these casinos for the state to be able to pull an "extra" $780,000,000 in taxes?  How can Kentucky families losing that much money be a good thing for the state?

In the whole world, there are a few thing that are illegal but people do it anyway. Gamling is one of them, if they can not gamble in Kentucky, they find they way to Indy or elswhere. why dont we let them gamble as they want in Kentucky? so Kentucky can get tax money over that?
Can we stop Kentuckian gamble in the other state? Wake up "Anti-gamble".

I sat down and eat with an older gentlemen, while on a cruise, and after find out that I was a Kentuckian, he promply ask me if we had passed the slot bill, and how did I feel about it. He informed me he had owned a neighbor bar in Nevada, that had slots, and that he had saw so many of his patron's lives destroy by gambling, that he got out of the bar business. This was enough to convince me, that we don't need this in our state.

I agree with you Andylau...people are going to gamble and passing slots in KY is not going to create any more people gambling than already go to Ohio and give their money to them; I know this cause I see it every weekend occuring.  People in this state expect so much but just like our illustrious President they can toss out a dollar figure they want to spend on said pet project but have NO clue where this money is supposed to come from.  Why don't we DO something to bring money INTO our state instead of just paying Ohio's bills for their citizens?
