A 5-year-old Boone County boy died Friday night after getting trapped in a car that drifted in a pond.
Deputies say James "Bubba" Harris, his older sister and a dog were in the car as their family prepared to leave when the car started rolling towards a nearby pond.
The car hit the water and started sinking. Several people tried to help but no one could get to the boy in time.
"Immediately a couple of the officers went into the water. The car at that point had not completely submerged, but it was shortly thereafter that the car did submerge," says Captain Linny Cloyd with the Florence Police Department.
The girl and the dog were able to escape before the car hit the water. We're told the boy was stuck in the submerged car for at least half an hour and later pronounced dead at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
