Kentucky's offense certainly stood out in the first half against Louisville. The defense wasn't half bad either.

The second half, the story was a little different. Kentucky stalled offensively and the defense gave up a few big plays, including an 80-yard run for a touchdown. Penalties on both sides of the ball showed some of the youth and inexperience on this team.

"Thank God we won," said UK defensive coordinator Steve Brown.

"Our number one goal is to win the game. Period. Whether we give up 50 or two points, our goal is to win and the nice thing about it is we did win so we were able to correct things during the course of the week at least on a high."

Brown made a move before Saturday's game, and maybe you noticed it. He wasn't up in the press box, he was down on the sideline. In fact, the last time he coached from the sideline was in the NFL.

"I really want to be around the guys. I want to see their eyes. I want to see their faces. I want to be able to communicate with them instead of having a third person try to say what I'm saying," said Brown.

But there's one thing that worries Brown about being down low.

"I don't want to pull a Randy Sanders and get my arm broken," he said smiling.

As far as Western Kentucky goes, Brown has looked at plenty of film of the Hilltoppers and Nebraska. WKU lost that game 49-10, but running back Bobby Rainey went for 155 yards and a touchdown against the Huskers. He ran for 99 yards on UK the last time the two teams played.

"That's got to be a confidence boost for them. They did some really good things. I looked closely to see how it went down and they were doing it against some good players. We showed our players the film and they know exactly what's coming at them. We're going to have to play better than we did against Louisville to have a chance to come out on top."

The Cats are 24 1/2 point favorites against WKU so this should get UK off to a 2-0 start. While Brown is very concerned about winning this game, he also hopes it will be a learning experience for his young defense.

"We all know that we've got a lot of improving to do and we're going to work on this thing as a work in progress throughout the year."
