Police and firefighters both busied themselves at a Lexington home Thursday night.
Patricia Murphy says she noticed a normally closed gate was open when she and her husband returned to their Pepperhill Road home from church. The couple went inside through the garage, smelled smoke and called 911.
Firefighters responded and put out a fire, but not before flames and smoke caused extensive damage inside the house.
Now police and fire investigators are both investigating.
"So, at this time we're investigating it as a burglary, and then looking into the structure fire. The arson investigators are on scene and they will be investigating to attempt to determine if it was by chance just an accidental fire, or possibly an arson." Lexington Police Department Lt. Mike Wright said.
Officials did not say what, if anything, was taken from the home.
