If you listen to the media, there is a big difference between UK's John Calipari and Ohio State's Thad Matta.
Sometimes, the media doesn't get it.
Since 2005, Cal is number one in wins.
Matta isn't chopped liver at number 5.
They believe you can't win without players having fun.
Cal is king of the one-and-done. Players who stay one season, leave and earn seven figure contracts. He had four last year.
Thad Matta isn't chopped liver. He's had 5.
Matta shows up to Ohio State seven years ago after a huge scandal. Jim O'Brien was fired for paying a recruit. Matta wants to be like Kentucky.
Cal is flashy, so says the media.
Matta is meat and potatoes, so says the media.
Matta's practices are about defense.
Cal doesn't talk defense very much because it's not how he recruits.
But, 67 is Cal's favorite number. When UK doesn't give up 67 points, they never lose. Never! They are 46-0 under Cal.
Matta doesn't give up 60 points a game this season. Do you find it interesting that in one of Ohio State's two losses it was to Wisconsin who leads the Big Ten giving up 58 points a game?
Throw out all the flash and any big time talk.
Defense will be the key for these coaches who have both made it to the NCAA Championship game and lost.
