Cutler's Comments

Cal's Risk Isn't Paying Off

Cal is a very emotional man in a very emotional profession.

He meant it when he said there are players on this team that aren't coachable.

He is using the media as his messenger.

The second thing Cal does, and he's very good at this, is to defuse issues with humor. So he still thinks some players aren't coachable, he wants the world to know he thinks that way, and he's hoping his latest comments based on emotion when you are upset losing a game the way you lost to Tennessee will cause some players to hopefully, finally change.

"I've made some crazy statements," says Cal. "That was nothing. Saying a guy's not coachable. Because you won't listen. You won't listen to anything. There are some other statements when I was younger. That was a very kind statement."

"I'm like Bernanke, the President. I make a statement and oh my gosh the stock market moves. We have to close down borders if I make a statement."

Cal admits that the bench isn't his friend. He refuses to recruit more great high school talent who could put Archie Goodwin and Alex Poythress on the bench.

"You are risking. The whole thing here too becomes, you lose your whole team and have a great class they are not quite to the...you know what I'm saying? That's the risk you take. It's part of the deal here. The other risk is I don't like having 12 guys on scholarship who all deserve to play."

Julius Mays has trouble relating to some of the freshman. He isn't throwing them under the bus, but he does not like how some of them are responding. As nice as he can be, Mays believes some of the freshman need to stop being so sensitive and grow up.

The senior isn't upset that Cal made the comment about some of the players not being coachable.

"Yeah but I'm a guy that you shouldn't have to take that," says the sharp shooting guard. "I just think that as a player you got to be able to make adjustments on the fly and be willing to accept the coaching and not feel like the coach is going to get down on you every time he's telling you something."

It is the job of any coach to find a way to communicate with his or her players and to get them to do what you want. So far it's not working. So far Cal is extremely frustrated, more so than he is going to tell you. But he is going to do the obvious. He's going to keep on coaching.

"We can be the story of the year," says Cal.

Maybe, but the shot clock is quickly disappearing.
