John Calipari coached his final game as the head coach of the Dominican Republic team Thursday night. He has said in the past he hopes his assistant Orlando Antigua will get the job after him.
While his team got blown out in his final game, Cal did have a lot of fun watching Anthony Davis get his opportunity on Team USA. With Blake Griffin definitely out with an injury, Davis is officially on the roster headed to London now. Thursday night he had nine points, including hitting a three pointer and getting fouled. Davis did a little trash talking to Coach Cal on the other bench afterwards.
"I'm so proud that Anthony is having this opportunity and I truly believe this experience will push him ahead in his career by years," Calipari said via twitter. "The coaching and what he'll learn from the players will be an enormous benefit."
Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski said that Davis was not expected to be a huge factor in London, but should be able to help the team.
Has one college basketball player ever had a better year? Davis could end up winning the national championship, being the national player of the year, the number one pick in the NBA draft, and now he's got a great shot at adding an Olympic gold medal to that.
