Authorities say a Clay County man assaulted his girlfriend, then kicked and threatened to kill a deputy sheriff.
According to an arrest citation, sheriff's deputies were called to a home on Twin Poplar Road in Manchester Tuesday night for a report that someone had been shot.
When the deputies arrived they said they were told there had not been a shooting, but that Jerry Harness "beat up" his girlfriend and was inside the home with a knife.
The deputies said Harness refused to drop the knife and told them if they did not leave, he would kill them. Harness was pepper-sprayed and the deputies wrestled the knife out of his hand. During the struggle, the deputies said Harness kicked one of them in the stomach.
Harness was taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment of a cut to his head and hand. He was then transported to the Clay County Detention Center.
