With the onset of summer heat, the Community Action Council's Summer Cooling Program has begun accepting applications for assistance.

High temperatures increase health risks for the elderly and people with medical conditions such as asthma, heart disease and other respiratory problems. Each year, the Community Action Council's Summer Cooling Program assists low income residents who face health risks due to the heat. The program loans air conditioners to qualified individuals who cannot afford them.

People in Fayette, Bourbon, Harrison, and Nicholas Counties with a medical need for cool air circulation verified by their doctor can apply for assistance. Applicants need to have a form letter from the Council completed and signed by their doctors explaining the medical need.

"The temperature has already been really hot this spring, which makes this program a priority for our sick and elderly neighbors. We need to be aware of our neighbors in these conditions and let people know there is help available," Cameron Minter, with the Council, said.

The program runs on donations from community members. A donation of $100 can place an air conditioner in someone's home.
