Members of the Gray community in Knox County gathered Sunday afternoon at a gravel lot to pray for the mother and father who lost their two young daughters in a house fire that also killed three other young children and two adults Saturday morning.
"They were beautiful, beautiful angels," said neighbor Brenda Mabe about Peiton and Brielle Cox. "They were together all the time holding hands. Where you saw Peiton you saw Brielle and where you saw Brielle you saw Peiton."
Both sisters were at a slumber party hosted by Jesse Disney and his girlfriend Nina Asher who was three months pregnant, family said. Both Disney and Asher, along with her three children, William, 3, Camden, 2, and ten-month-old Abigail, died in the fire that happened before 10 a.m. Saturday on Shady Brook Lane, a few miles from the Cox's house.
"I don't understand what happened," said Peggy Smith, an aunt of the Cox family. "God does. He'll let us know when the time is right."
Investigators still have not released what caused the fire or where it started. While official causes of death have not been determined pending autopsies of all seven people, some of the Disney family members told LEX 18 Saturday that it looked like everyone died from smoke inhalation.
Funeral arrangements for Nina and her three children are being handled by Knox Funeral Home in Barbourville. Donations can be made at the Commercial Bank in Barbourville, 202 N. Main Street, Barbourville, KY or by calling 606-546-3146.
Donations for Brielle and Peiton Cox can be made to Vankirk-Griselle Funeral Home in Corbin which is also handling their funeral.
