An eighth-grade student from Jessie Clark Middle School was upgraded from critical to serious condition Tuesday at UK Hospital, one day after passing out while participating in pre-season conditioning with the Lafayette High School baseball team.

Students who were attending a basketball game at Lafayette High School say Ben Highland passed out at around 5:15 p.m. The school's athletic trainer administered CPR for several minutes until EMS arrived and took him to UK Hospital.

Staff members with Fayette County Schools were at UK Hospital to show support Monday night. Officials said the school system's crisis team met with the faculty and staff at Jessie Clark Middle School before school started Tuesday, and additional counselors will be available for students as needed.
