NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) - A New Britain man accused of picking up a 14-year-old girl from her Kentucky home has waived extradition to face charges.

The New Britain Herald reports that the lawyer for David Hernandez said Monday his client believed he was on a "mission of mercy" to take the girl from an abusive situation. He said the youngster said she was an adult.

The 51-year-old Hernandez was held in New Britain over the weekend on $1 million bond on a fugitive from justice charge. A judge reduced his bond to $100,000.

Officials from Kentucky are scheduled to pick Hernandez up Jan. 17 to face charges in connection with the girl's disappearance. She was found at Hernandez's home Thursday night.

His lawyer says the girl and Hernandez's 15-year-old son knew each other on Facebook.
