Thieves destroyed an air conditioning unit at a Lexington church denomination office early Friday morning.

Police say officers responded to the Christian Church in Kentucky (Disciples of Christ) offices on Red Mile Road around 1 a.m when an alarm indicated tampering with an A/C unit. When officers arrived, they found one of the building's four units completely disassembled. Police say the air conditioning units are located behind a six-foot high chain link fence, damaged by the thieves when they got in. Police say the suspects took off before officers arrived, leaving behind a backpack and some tools.

Police say the thieves caused several thousand dollars in damage.

It was reportedly the second time copper thieves destroyed an A/C unit at the church offices this year.
