The Cumberland County coroner has released the name of a two-year-old girl who was accidentally shot to death Tuesday by her five-year-old brother.
The coroner said Caroline Sparks was accidentally shot inside the family's home on Lawson's Bottom Road. According to state police, Caroline's five-year-old brother was playing with a rifle when it fired. The coroner says the childrens' mother was home at the time, cleaning and had just stepped outside for a minute or two when she heard the rifle fire and ran back inside.
The coroner says the Crickett rifle had been given to the five-year-old last year for his birthday, and that the gun was kept in a corner. The family didn't realize it had a shell inside.
State police say they are actively investigating to see what to do next.
A fund has been set up to help the family at Citizens Bank of Cumberland County, P.O. Box 810, under the "Caroline Sparks Memorial Fund."
