Ricky Hamilton disappeared Saturday afternoon while hunting with his dad. The two separated, and the search began when Hamilton failed to show up at their planned meeting place. Searchers found his body Tuesday afternoon at the bottom of a quarry, less than a mile from his home. Officials say it appears the 15-year-old fell from a cliff.
Family, friends and classmates gathered at the Fleming County High School football field to mourn the death of Hamilton Tuesday evening, with more than 500 people attending. Hamilton's football teammates and members of his sophomore class released balloons in his honor.
Fleming County High School principal Mark Leet had the difficult task of gathering students Tuesday afternoon to deliver the news.
"It's painful for the teachers. We had teachers and students that were out searching for Ricky over the weekend. So when the news came today, it was heart breaking," he said.
Officials say grief counselors will be at the school Monday, when students return from Thanksgiving break.
The family has not announced funeral plans.
