Police say a double leg amputee was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly lied about being a police officer and, while posing as one, made off with more than $200 in yard sale items.
The suspect, Monte Duvall, told LEX 18 news in a jailhouse interview in Scott County he's a down-on-his luck Vietnam vet, crippled by the loss of his legs. He alleged told the story to a Georgetown woman right before police say he stole from her yard sale.
Witness Adam Hobbs something didn't seem right from the get go. Hobbs met the 56-year-old Duvall, when he pulled up to their garage sale Saturday. "He said he was a Vietnam vet, he had two prosthetic legs, so he said he couldn't get out of the car, we brought him the stuff and showed it to him, felt sorry for him.
Judy Hobbs saud she even fixed Duvall a peanut butter and jelly sandwich because he said his sugar level was falling.
But, minutes later, Adam Hobbs said that his gut suspicion was confirmed when a man on a motorcycle sped past where they were standing. "(Duvall) said, "I'm a deputy sheriff, stop him!" he said. "I looked at him and I told him no.
At that point, Hobbs said took off, with a car full of items he hadn't paid for.
Duvall said in a jailhouse interview Monday that he told Hobbs that the sheriff's department department needed to be called and tell them someone was going to get hurt. As for the yard sale items, Duvall says he left a debit card and license with the Hobbs, and said he'd come back.
Instead, Duvall was arrested at this home on West College Street, the Hobbs say having used their sympathy to steal from them.
The Hobbs say police recovered almost all of their stolen items.
