Deputy Cleared In Fatal Shooting Of Driver

HODGENVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A grand jury in central Kentucky has cleared a sheriff's deputy of criminal charges in the fatal shooting of a suspect after the man's car spun out and he allegedly began accelerating toward the deputy.

The Larue County grand jury on Monday declined to indict Deputy James E. Williamson.

The man shot Dec. 7 was 38-year-old Thomas E. Ferguson of Magnolia, and he died the following day.

Kentucky State Police said the incident happened when Williamson responded to a report of a reckless driver and tried to stop the driver. Police said the driver ignored the deputy's signals to stop, and as Williamson was pursuing him on Kentucky 1192, the driver's vehicle spun out and came to rest facing Williamson. Police said the driver accelerated and Williamson fired.
