Two first half goals within a 30 second span lifted the Dunbar High School boys' soccer team into the state championship game.
The second ranked Bulldogs (25-3-0) topped No. 10 Henderson County 2-0, setting up a championship match with top-ranked St. Xavier.
Shaquille Guiseppe scored on a breakaway with just over eight minutes left in the first frame. Less than 30 second later, Riley Calhoon put one in off a pass by Matthew Spanyer.
That was all Dunbar would need. Keeper Fernando Ortiz and the Bulldog D did the rest. Ortiz also got a little help from the crossbar. Two Henderson County shots found metal instead of net.
Adam Kirsch scored both St. Xavier goals, as the state's top team shut out No. 23 Boone County. The Tigers have not lost a game all season. No. 15 Greenwood battled St. Xavier to a 1-1 tie back on Sept. 29 and Brebeuf Jesuit, Ind. also earned a 1-1 tie. After the tie with Greenwood, the Tigers went on a tear. They have not even given up a goal in 10 games.
St. X also basks in the national spotlight. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America ranks the Tigers No. 5 in the U.S.
The Bulldogs will enjoy one little advantage. The KHSAA is hosting the championship game at Dunbar High School.
The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Saturday.
