CUMBERLAND, Ky. (AP) - An eastern Kentucky mayor has submitted his resignation after council members asked for it.
The Harlan Daily Enterprise reports Cumberland City Council members approved a motion at their meeting Tuesday night asking Mayor Carl Hatfield to step down immediately.
Hatfield agreed to resign, saying he didn't feel he could do an effective job as mayor if five council members wanted him to leave.
Council members said they had a difficult time working with Hatfield and thought asking him to step down would be the best course of action.
Hatfield says he turned in his written resignation on Wednesday.
