An eighth-grade student from Jessie Clark Middle School remains in critical condition after passing out while participating in pre-season conditioning with the Lafayette High School baseball team.

Students who were attending a basketball game at Lafayette High School say Ben Highland passed out at around 5:15 p.m. The school's athletic trainer administered CPR for several minutes until EMS arrived and took him to UK Hospital.

Highland is listed in critical condition.

Staff members with Fayette County Schools were at UK Hospital to show support Monday night. Officials say the school system's crisis team will meet with the faculty and staff at Jessie Clark Middle School before school starts, and additional counselors will be available for students as needed.
