A Pulaski County mother is counting her blessings after a freak accident that she says could have killed her son.
Michael Phelps, 22, a senior at Eastern Kentucky University was one of several people hospitalized after the deck they were on collapsed early Saturday morning in Madison County.
"It's a call you don't want to get," described Kim Albright, Phelps' mother. "I've got a distinctive ring tone on my phone that tells me it's my son calling. So at 2:30 in the morning, I'm thinking, what's wrong?"
On the other end of the phone was an unfamiliar voice telling Albright that Phelps had been rushed to UK Hospital.
"Really shocked at what I saw. My son laying there and his eyes are just black and blue and purple and his face is all swollen," said Albright.
Phelps was one of many at a home in Richmond's Castlewood subdivision enjoying a party, when the deck on the back of the home suddenly collapsed. Several people, including Phelps, fell to a concrete porch, one story below.
"His face actually smashed into the concrete," Albright said. "That's all it was. A freak accident. And he just happened to be there."
The 22-year-old suffered a fractured skull, jaw, and knee cap. His eyes were left bruised and swollen shut.
While Phelps is now back home in Pulaski County, his mom tells LEX 18, he still has a long road left to recovery.
"He's gonna make it. He's gonna be fine. He's a tough guy," Albright said.
Phelps was one of three people taken to UK Hospital after the deck collapsed. Several others were also treated at a nearby hospital.
Investigators have not said what caused the deck to fall.
