An elderly man accused of shoplifting and then firing at a police officer in Lincoln County made a court appearance Thursday.
Police say 71-year-old Jackie Murphy was caught shoplifting at a Walmart then fired at a Stanford police officer back in August. Murphy did not come to the front of the courtroom for his arraignment, and both the Commonwealth and Murphy's lawyer almost whispered during the case.
Investigators say Murphy may have suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of his time in Vietnam. Friends even told the Danville Advocate-Messenger that Murphy had been acting strangely before the shooting and talking about Vietnam.
Murphy is charged with attempted murder of a police officer.
