A man who escaped from a Fayette County Sheriff's Office cruiser in Nicholasville Monday afternoon turned himself in early Tuesday morning.
Christian Cox, 22, got out the back door of the cruiser at a red light along Main Street in Nicholasville around 3:30 p.m. He was on his way from the Jessamine County Detention Center to the Lexington Division of Community Corrections. Vernie Campbell says her home became ground zero for the search when her husband unknowingly let the escapee use the phone.
"That made me feel pretty bad. He never did come inside the house, but he was right out back. I was turned inside out. My stomach felt like somebody knocked me down," she said.
Cox surrendered to police in Lexington just after 2 a.m. Police say he told them he was with family members.
Cox was originally wanted on a warrant for probation violation. Officials say he will now face an escape charge.
