The family of an Anderson County woman found dead in her apartment Sunday wants investigators to take a closer look at how she died.
First, the coroner said Melissa Brown's death was suspicious, but later downgraded it to simply a "death investigation." Brown's family told LEX 18 they think she may have been killed.
Tuesday, family saw Brown for the first time at the funeral home. They say she's badly bruised, and the welts on her face weren't there the day before she was found dead.
"The whole right side of her face is black, her eye is as black as coal, we just want a thorough investigation to see what's happened," says James Brown, Melissa's nephew.
Inside her apartment, James says it appeared as though there had been a fight:
"There was a big puddle of blood laying in the foyer in front of the couch, there was pickles, barbeque sauce laying all over the place, there was a big bat hole in the wall, it was just a horrible for a family member to have to go through."
The day Brown was found, her neighbor told LEX 18 she heard brown arguing with someone the night before.
It's all too much for this family: the bruises, the blood. They're asking for answers about what happened to this mom and grandma in the hours before she died.
"We don't want it to go this way, not knowing what really happened," James says.
The Anderson County coroner says toxicology reports are pending. He maintains Brown's death is not suspicious.
