It was a night for the favorites in High School basketball district tournament action Tuesday.
Most top teams rolled to easy victories in opening round action, and the night proved barren for upset lovers.
BOYS
No. 2 Madison Central thumped Berea 79-30. Dominique Hawkins led the Indians with 16 points. Madison Central turned 24 Berea turnovers into 33 points. The Indian defense allowed just five Pirate points in the first half. Barry Scudder-Davis scored 16 for Berea.
Fourth ranked Scott County also pounced early and then cruised victory, knocking off Sayre 69-38. The Cardinals led 17-6 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Trenton Gilbert and Tamron Manning scored 13 points each to lead Scott County. Reid Freeman pumped in 22 points for Sayre to lead all scorers. Scott County will face the winner of Wednesday's matchup between Bryan Station and Henry Clay for the 42nd District crown.
In the 10th Region, George Rogers Clark and Montgomery County both earned victories, setting up a rematch in the 40th District championship game. The Cardinals and Indians split during the regular season.
Tenth ranked GRC topped Bourbon County 78-42. Dominic VanCleve scored 16 points and Bopper Stenzel finished with 13.
Omar Prewitt scored a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds in Montgomery County's 62-44 victory over Paris. Aaron Jacobs topped the score sheet for Paris with 17 points.
Sophomore Jackson Davis led Lafayette over Tates Creek, scoring 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Jordan Fucci and Darius Gibson each finished with 10 points for the Commodores. Lexington Catholic and Dunbar will square of Wednesday night for the opportunity to challenge Lafayette for the 43rd District title.
In the 41st, Franklin County topped Frankfort 82-52. Ryan Timmons led the way with 25 points and 10 boards. The Flyers will take on the winner of the Woodford County - Western Hills matchup.
West Jessamine rode a balanced offensive attack to an easy 62-46 win over Burgin. Chase Fain led the Colts with 14 points, and Daulton Peters, Robby Irgang and DeShawn Eubanks each scored 11.The West victory set up a 46th District showdown with cross town rival East Jessamine.
No. 1 Trinity swatted aside Atherton 84-63, and third ranked Louisville Moore took care of business, roaring past Bullitt Central 73-47.
Danville crushed the Kentucky School for the Deaf 81-8. Jawan Grey scored 17 points and Jay Hunn added 15 for the victors.
Clay Cannon and Baylen Hill each scored 14 points as Casey County edged Somerset 55-53. Luke Carman also hit double figures with 12 points.
GIRLS
Girls' action nearly produced a couple of upsets.
But not quite.
Dunbar held off a determined Lafayette squad, earning a 56-49 win. The Lady Bulldogs opened up a five point lead in the first quarter, but the Lady Generals stormed back in the second and led 23-19 at halftime. Lafayette still clung to a lead late in the third, but Dunbar finally put the Generals away in the final frame. Kierra Muhammad led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points. Jordin Fender pitched in with 12 and sparked the Dunbar D with five steals. Ashanti Thomas scored a double-double for Lafayette with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Dunbar will take on the winner of Wednesday night's Lexington Catholic - Lexington Christian matchup for the 43rd District championship.
Tereka Guyn led Scott County to a 63-58 victory over Henry Clay, with 17 points and 13 rebounds. The Blue Devils sliced a 10-point Cardinal lead to two with less than a minute to play, but couldn't get over the hump for the win. Ceci Evans led Henry Clay with 14 points. Scott County will face the Bryan Station - Sayre winner.
Madison Central rolled Berea 81-38. Larryn Brooks led the way with 20 points.
No. 2 Marion County also cruised to victory. Logan Powell scored 16 points and Makayla Epps pitched in with 11 in a 74-25 win over Campbellsville.
Third ranked Boone County crushed Conner 78-37.
No. 4 Perry County Central took care of business, crushing Buckhorn 81-28. Kendall Noble scored a triple-double with 11 points, 11 assists and 10 steals.
Franklin County knocked off Western Hills 61-36. Dasia Kilbourne led the Flyers with 17 points. Franklin County will face the winner of Wednesday's game between Woodford County and Frankfort.
District champions and runner-ups will move on to regional tourney play.
