A fire damaged an apartment building in downtown Danville Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out into a house converted into apartments along Caldwell Street just after 5 a.m. A resident in one of the apartments says he woke up and smelled what he thought was burning plastic. He got everybody out, and when they got outside they saw flames coming from a vacant unit.

Firefighters quickly got the blaze under control, but the fire caused heavy damage in the apartment where the fire apparently started. A family had rented the unit, but had not moved in yet.

Firefighters have not determined the cause of the fire, but say it was possibly electrical in nature.

There were no reported injuries.
