It took firefighters more than four hours to extinguish a blaze at a Lexington warehouse early Tuesday morning.

The owner says a mechanic was working on a car that was halfway inside the building around 12:30 a.m. when he accidentally cut a gas line, sparking the fire. The man ran inside the warehouse and brought a child safely out before the whole building went up in flames.

There were no reported injuries, but the owner said a dog may have died in the fire.

Flames shot high above the building as the fire engulfed the warehouse. Gasoline and oil inside the building fed the flames.

Mark Dolphin lives nearby. He says he heard the fire ignite.

"It just sounded like an explosion. I mean, like womph. Just a big noise. Our room is right hear in this front window. I mean, you heard it. It was loud. When I came over they, the whole roof was just going up," he said.

The narrowness of Price Avenue and overhead power lines hampered firefighting efforts. KU had to shut off power in the area in order for crews to raise aerial ladders.

Firefighters had to evacuate some nearby homes due to the intensity of the flames. Some of the houses sustained minor damage as siding melted in the heat.

The owner apparently operated several businesses out of the warehouse, which was a total loss.
