Firefighters rushed to one of the oldest buildings in Winchester after a fire broke out early Tuesday morning.
The blaze started sometime before 4 a.m. in an old home converted into apartments along South College Street. A police officer on the way home spotted smoke and called in the alarm.
Firefighters say it appears the fire started in the basement. Flames burned up through the walls and scorched all three floors of the building. The fire chief called the damage significant.
Firefighters say nobody was inside when the blaze broke out. The building was split into four apartments and an office, but nobody was living there. The owner says he was contemplating renovating the building.
The owner says the building is one of the oldest in Winchester.
