When you think of fallen firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty, a couple of Lexington firefighters quickly come to mind, but, of course, there were many more who were remembered and honored during Wednesday's 13th Annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Frankfort.
They stood at attention, paid their respects and listened as fellow firefighters talked about the fallen. "These firefighters that we honor today were giants among men not because of their physical stature, but because of the sacrifices they made everyday," said Lexington Fire Battalion Chief Gregg Bayer.
Giants like Lexington firefighter Brenda Cowan, who shot to death in the line of duty back in 2006 while responding to a domestic situation, and Chuck Williams, who was killed after falling through a floor while battling a Lexington house fire in 1997. Both Cowan and Williams names are inscribed on the memorial wall, and remain in fellow firefighter minds.
"Being on the fire when Chuck Williams was killed and then also being on duty when Lt. Cowan was killed, both of those will always be near and dear to my heart," said Bayer. "Knowing both of those people personally, what wonderful people they were and the supreme sacrifice that they paid."
Bayer, who was also part of the motorcycle tribute to firefighters, is happy that for the past two years no names have been added to the memorial wall and everybody hopes they never have to again.
