A fire blazed through a Frankfort fourplex Thursday morning, leaving four families homeless.

The call came in around 5 a.m. Firefighters say they saw heavy smoke and flames in the rear of one of the apartments, and the fire had already spread up to the second story. Twelve people lived in the building, including several small children. Everybody was safely out when crews arrived. Firefighters say smoke detectors were sounding a warning.

There were no injuries, but one dog died in the blaze.

The fire destroyed two apartments and the other two suffered heavy smoke damage. The American Red Cross assisted the families and helped them find temporary housing.

Fire officials say it appears the fire started in a storage shed outside of a first floor apartment. The do not know the cause of the blaze, but say it doesn't appear suspicious.
