Five Shot Before Police Kill Shooter

Five people, including three law enforcement officers, suffered injuries before police shot and killed the shooter in Breathitt County Sunday night.

Police say a man fired a shotgun at a passing car from a home along HWY-30 in the Canoe community around 8 p.m., and wounded Brenda Southwood and Larry Adams. Kentucky State Police troopers and Breathitt County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the scene, and the suspect began firing at the officers. Buckshot struck KSP Trooper Joey King in the face. Two deputies also suffered minor wounds. Police returned fire until the suspect stopped shooting.

Police say troopers and deputies found the suspect on the front porch of the home with a gunshot wound. EMS took the shooter to Kentucky River Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

King was also taken to the hospital for treatment. Officials called his injuries non-life threatening. Adams, Southwood and the two deputies were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Officials have not released the name of the shooter, pending notification of next of kin.
