Floyd County Man Killed After Car Struck By Semi

A Floyd County man was killed Tuesday after his car was struck by a tractor.

The incident happened just before 3 p.m. in the Stanville community of Floyd County. State Police say Mayfield Pennington 62, was driving a 1977 Corvette and was attempting to enter the southbound lane of U.S. 23. Pennington lost control of his vehicle, coming to rest in the right southbound lane of U.S. 23 facing northbound. Edward Carter was driving a freightliner tractor and trailer traveling south on U.S. 23 and struck Pennington's vehicle.

Pennington was pronounced deceased at the scene by Floyd County Deputy Coroner Chuck Hall. The accident remains under investigation.

Pennington was professional boxer with a record of 48-16. He was best known for victories over former US Olympian Sugar Ray Seals and former Middle Weight Champion of the World Emile Griffith. Pennington ran his own gym in Pikeville. A statement on the gym's website summed up his purpose.

"He hopes to give kids something better to do with their time other than drugs and crime."
