Former University of Kentucky halfback/defensive back Rodger Bird was named to the the 2011 Southeastern Conference Football Legends Class.
Bird played for the Cats from 1963-1965. Time magazine and NBC named him a first-team All-American in 1965. He was named to the All-SEC team twice (1964,1965) by the Associated Press and United Press International.
Known as the "Corbin Comet," Bird kicked off his college career with a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Virginia Tech on his very first play. He rushed for 1,699 yards and 21 touchdowns during his career. Bird was also an excellent pass receiver and kick returner, totaling 3,333 all-purpose yards as a Wildcat. The Corbin native, still holds school records for most career touchdowns with 27, and his four TDs remains a single game school record.
A standout safety on defense, he intercepted five passes in his career, including a 95-yard touchdown return vs. Auburn in 1964.
Bird was a first-round draft choice of the Oakland Raiders, where he played six years as a defensive back.
