Former Fayette County Teacher Charged With Sexual Abuse

Lexington police have charged a former Fayette County Schools employee with sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy.

According to court documents, Jason Thompson, 31, performed oral sex on the victim and also fondled the boy on another occasion. Investigators say both incidents happened in the summer of 2009. Police charged him with one count of sodomy and two counts of sexual abuse.

Thompson was a special education teacher at Leestown Middle School. School officials say he worked in the school system from 1996 to 2011, first as a substitute teacher, then as a a special education instructional assistant at Booker T. Washington Academy before moving on to Leestown Middle School. He also served as a dance team coach at Leestown Middle.

Fayette County school officials say they received reports of two allegations against Thompson in June of 2011 and August of 2011. They forwarded the information to social services, and Thompson resigned during the investigation.

School officials say they are mailing out letters to parents of current and former students at Leestown Middle during Thompson's tenure there.

Thompson is also a nationally known Zumba instructor. Promotional material lists him as one of six instructors in the latest Xbox Kinect Zumba Fitness Rush game. His profile photo on Facebook is his avatar from the game.

Thompson is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, July 26.
