A former Monroe County sheriff gunned down in his driveway was laid to rest on Monday.
Police say Herbert Proffitt, 82, was shot by a former jail inmate in a drive-by shooting last Tuesday. His funeral was originally scheduled for Friday, but was postponed when his widow, Bernice Proffitt, became ill. She died Sunday.
"In my own opinion, I'd say if one of them left, they'd want the other to go with them. That's my opinion," current Monroe County Sheriff Roger Barlow said.
The Proffitts were married more than 50 years.
Police have arrested Charles Hammer, 81, of Tompkinsville, and charged him with murder. Hammer spent time in jail, and Proffitt reportedly helped put him there back in the 1980s.
