A fund has been set up for a Lexington high school baseball player who suffered a serious injury while swimming in the ocean in Florida Tuesday afternoon.
Fayette County Schools spokesperson Lisa Deffendall confirms a Paul Laurence Dunbar baseball player, who has been identified by other sources as Travis Gaines, suffered an injury. She says it was not sustained while playing baseball, but did not release any additional information.
Officials with Centre College said that Gaines had recently signed to go to school there.
According to the Northwest Florida Daily News, a fire department official said Gaines, 18, dove into the surf at Destin West Beach and Bay Resort Gulfside and likely misjudged the depth. He was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. The Florida paper reported the teen may have paralysis.
The fund has been set up at 5/3 bank, and checks can be made out to "Benefit for Travis Gaines."
