The Henry Clay boys' basketball team is for real.

Last week, Blue Devils' coach Daniel Brown Sr. said his talented but young squad wasn't just building for the future, but planned to compete for a championship this year.

Henry Clay backed up his assertion by knocking off top-ranked, undefeated Madison Central on Jan. 31, then taking down No. 4 Scott County 63-59 Friday night.

The victory snapped a six-year, 17-game Blue Devil losing streak against the Cardinals.

Henry Clay (19-6) led by two at the end of the first quarter, then took advantage when Scott County star Tamron Manning got into foul trouble and built a 29-20 halftime lead. The Cardinals (22-4) rallied in the third frame, outscoring the Devils 20-12, then edged ahead 42-41 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. Henry Clay put together an 8-0 run of its own, then held on for the win.

Christen Cunningham led Henry Clay with 19 points. Trey Grundy and Jordan Green each put in 12.

Isaiah Ivey topped the score sheet for Scott County, finishing with 17 points. Manning scored a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

With a lineup featuring three sophomores and a junior, Henry Clay has jelled late in the season. Since last losing to Scott County 65-56 back on Jan.3, the Blue Devils have won 10 straight games.
