Henry Clay's Whalen Wins State Wrestling Title

Henry Clay sophomore Michael Whalen took home the lightweight Kentucky state wrestling title Saturday night in Lexington.

The championship match featured a rerun of the Seventh Region championship a week ago, with Whalen out battling Lafayette junior Luke Rearic. The Blue Devil lightweight topped his longtime, friendly rival from across town 7-4. The victory capped an undefeated season for Whalen.

Campbell County won the team title. The Camels edged out defending state champion Union County 196-176. Trinity took third, with La Rue County and Simon Kenton Rounding out the top five.

It was the fourth state wrestling title for Campbell County.

Johnson Central's J.J. Jude repeated as state champ at 170 pounds, taking out Hiero Chamblee of Simon Kenton 6-3 in the championship round. It was Jude's second straight undefeated season.

Tates Creek heavyweight Terrell Moore wrestled his way to a second place finish. Campbell County's Mason Franck edged out the Commodore senior in a 1-0 decision, scoring on an escape with just 1:30 left in the match.

Perennial wrestling power Woodford County came in12th place with 73.5 points. The Mat Jackets placed three wrestles in the top five of their weight class. Wyatt Courtney finished fourth at 160 pounds, Cory McCall placed fifth at 145, and Shane White also earned a fifth place finish at 138 pounds.

Several other area wrestles earned top five finishes. Franklin County's Tevon Clay finished in third at 138 pounds. Gabe McIlrath of Montgomery point wrestled his way to fifth place in the 153 pound weight class. And Rhodes Bell placed fourth at 170 pounds for Danville.
