(AP) - An inmate started a fire in a cell at the Fayette County Detention Center, but the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived.

Battalion Chief Marshall Griggs of the Lexington Fire Department said they were called to the jail around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, but the fire was already out by the time they arrived.

Battalion Chief Brent Frizzell told the Lexington Herald-Leader that some papers and a mattress were burned in the cell and the fire remains under investigation.

Griggs said five inmates were temporarily moved to other areas of the jail while firefighters cleared smoke from the building.
